This paper explores the internal conflicts that may derail efforts to undertake or complete a dissertation. In the review of literature on this subject and in several illuminating case studies, the author focuses on four indicators: fantasy of the meaning and significance of doctoral dissertation; evidence of drive fusion or defusion; sexual identity and object choice difficulties; and potential for drive satisfaction. Preliminary findings are proposed and topics for further research are suggested.
