This paper examines the “dead mother complex,” defined by André Green (1986), and gives particular consideration to the patient's seduction of the father in order to defend against longing and rage towards the “dead mother.” The author provides vivid, in-depth clinical studies of two patients who grew up with such a mother. These studies offer insight into the patients' complex inner worlds especially as revealed through the author's countertransference experiences.
