Intutition is like gravity. We cannot see or touch it, but we are confident it exists. The dictionary defines intuition as the power of knowing or understanding something immediately without reason or without being taught. The voice of intuition develops in the unconscious and is a valuable tool in evaluating a tangled mass of feelings, ideas, and desires that may result in a therapeutic impasse. Listening intuitively involves the recognition of symbolic communication, metaphors, dreams, induction, nonverbal emotional communications, sensory perceptions, and repetitions connected to disavowed desire. The cases presented illustrate the analyst listening to these variables and developing an intervention based on the patient's unconscious.
