This paper explores how the objective countertransference can be used by the analyst to determine the curative emotional communication required to resolve a resistance and/or meet a maturational need. The author delineates four different ways in which the emotional communication the analyst chooses may relate to the countertransference feelings induced by the patient. Many case examples illustrate the process the analyst may go through in selecting an intervention.
