The author contrasts the Freudian and the modern psychoanalytic approaches to analysis, pointing out the importance of emotional communication in the latter approach. He discusses techniques used by modern analysts such as object-oriented questions and contact functioning as well as the way in which modern analysts use language to aid the patient's emotional maturation, focusing on “investigating” rather than on “explaining.”
