Biblical Commentary as a Psychoanalytic Defense: Two Deeds of Abraham*

Certified psychologist and a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City. For many years he worked as a clinical psychologist providing diagnostic psychological testing and psychotherapy for children, adolescents, and adults at a number of institutions including Harlem Valley State Hospital, Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Children's Court, and the Educational Clinic at City College. He was Chief Psychologist at the Jewish Family Service for many years, served as Supervising Psychologist at the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services, and was Director of Family Therapy at Roosevelt Hospital and Chief Psychologist at the Theodor Reik Clinic. Early in his career he held educational positions as teaching assistant at Teachers College, Columbia University and lecturer at Hunter College and at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Education. He trained as a psychoanalyst with Theodor Reik and became a Senior Member of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. He later trained with Hyman Spotnitz and is on the Senior Faculty (Emeritus) of the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies. Affiliated with The Psychoanalytic Review for 50 years, he served as its Managing Editor for eight years. His publications include Roles and Paradigms in Psychotherapy (co-author), Psychoanalysis in America: Historical Perspectives, Psychoanalysis and Old Vienna, and A Rorschach Reader as well as many published articles.
