A Contract to Terminate: Mourning the End of the Transference

Professor of English, emerita, at the State University of New York at Buffalo and a visiting scholar in the English Department at the University of California at Berkeley. A recent graduate of the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute, she has written extensively on modern American and British fiction, focusing on hysteria and the effects of trauma on narrative voice. She has written numerous essays and is the author of Passions of the Voice: Hysteria, Narrative and the Figure of the Speaking Woman, 1850-1915 and co-editor of In Dora'sCase: Freud, Hysteria, Feminism and The M/Other Tongue: Essays in Feminist Psychoanalytic Criticism. Most recently, as a member of the outreach liaison committee of the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis and chair of the seminar for scholars committee, she organized a year-long seminar (2007-2008) on “Psychoanalysis and War” at U. C. Berkeley.
