From the Couch to the Circle: Hyman Spotnitz and Group Psychotherapy

Dean emeritus of group studies at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies. He has served as group therapy consultant in a wide variety of clinical and educational settings, including the Jewish Board of Guardians from 1956 to 1975 and the department of psychiatry at Jacobi Medical Center and at Montefiore Hospital. In 2007, he received the Gradiva award from N.A.A.P. for two papers: “The New Member: ‘Infanticide’ in Group Therapy” and “The Thermostatic Function of the Group Analyst: Regulating the Degree of Stimulation in the Group.” He has written extensively on various aspects of the group psychotherapy experience, with a focus on the various tasks of the group therapist, and is a life fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association.
