The author maintains that both Freud and Loewald conceive mental life dialectically, as the interaction between mutually defining, interdependent polar sides of psychological experience. The major dialectical tension addressed is mind as a closed vs. mind as an open system, metapsychologically seen in Freud's instinct theories and Loewald's revisions. Wisdom is related to how both theorists strive to stay open to and integrate the mind's dialectical nature.
