Freud's family romance describes a universal feeling of having been born to parents of exalted status. In this paper the author proposes that the more primal version of this fantasy is that of the magically endowed adopted child. She suggests that the function of this fantasy is to provide a psychical “rapprochement” pathway back to necessary feelings of omnipotence and postulates a universal “adoption experience” from which the fantasy of the magically endowed, adopted child is born.
