This paper explores the relationship between anatomy and psyche in relation to gender differences and offers a modification of Freud's perspective on gender differences. The author addresses the ways that biological forces-in particular those that impel us to reproduce—shape human identity along gender lines and influence psychic structure. Parallels between scientific research on arousal reduction circuits in the brain and Freudian drive theory are also examined.
