Louise Glück, Pulitzer Prize winner in 1993 and U.S. poet laureate from 2003 to 2004, calls psychoanalysis “one of the great experiences in … [her] life.” Psychoanalysis has been a major influence on the person—Glück first entered analysis as a 17-year-old trying to find a way out of anorexia—and on the poet. This paper examines how psychoanalysis both as a theory of memory and as a model of speaking and writing informs Glück's investigation of the mythical figure of Persephone, the protagonist in Averno (2006).
