This paper follows the treatment of a woman locked in the grip of an obsessional neurosis. Cut off from awareness of both her love and her murderous impulses, she disables and restricts herself through rituals, fears, and self-punitive behaviors. Bringing her desire and hatred into the transference enabled her to obtain some understanding of her drives and to achieve potential for joy and spontaneity.
