In this paper the author traces Freud's reformulations of his drive theory and demonstrates how Freud struggled to anchor his theory in a conflict-based system. The most crucial steps in Freud's thinking and re-thinking of this theory are illustrated with clinical examples taken from the case history of Little Hans, showing both the flexibility and limitations of Freud's system of conflict.
