This paper describes the novel work of the Philadelphia Consultation Center, a Medicaid funded clinic that works with patients in a modern psychoanalytically-informed style. The clinic is inspired by the precedent established by Freud that psychoanalytic treatment should never be withheld from a person for lack of funds. The author also highlights the unique array of challenges inherent in rapidly training early-career clinicians to do psychoanalytic work when they themselves have never been exposed to these principles. Out of this need, a “crash course in Spotnitz” has been developed by the author in order to shape the therapeutic stances of complete beginners to psychoanalysis.
