Aggressive wishes may motivate impulsivity and inhibition. Since destructive impulsivity seems most likely to occur when the patient has no commitments to anyone, modern psychoanalysts focus first on fostering a narcissistic transference within which a patient may discharge tension in the presence of another person. When the repetition compulsion enters the transference, the patient is driven to repeat negative emotional experiences with the analyst. This resistance to progress is viewed as a special form of impulse disorder. Commands, prohibitions, and emotional communications are used to enable the patient to have new emotional experiences in the transference.
