The author explores some of the biological and preverbal explanations of the powerful recalcitrance of negative resistant states. Patients come to us for relief or for help with something in their current lives, but gradually slide into a pattern of behaviors and feeling states that we experience as repetitive, and recognize as being repetitive of older patterns. They cling to destructive behaviors and to agonizing feelings, and insist (consciously or unconsciously) that nothing can change. The author suggests approaches for resolving them.
