This article arose out of the author's conversations with female colleagues and supervisees, and explores the constriction many female therapists feel in their capacity to have sexual thoughts and feelings in their clinical work. It offers a number of potential explanations, cultural as well as intrapsychic, for women therapists' resistance to erotic countertransference with male patients, and provides clinical vignettes that illustrate some of the ways resistance to erotic feelings may show up in the clinical hour.
