Modern psychoanalytic theory and experience tell us that unless the analyst becomes involved enough in the treatment relationship to generate unintended emotional events, the analysis will not succeed. That the analyst will be drawn into the analysand's world through enactments, as well as by other means, presents us with a pathway to understanding the unconscious of the analysand, as well as that of the analyst. Enactments will dislodge the analyst from the traditional position of the objective blank screen. By examining the concept of enactments we can learn how subjective reactions can best be utilized in the clinical setting.
