The various effects of third-party payment and its impact on treatment are discussed. Global debate on the topic is introduced, and many of the diverse opinions that have long been expressed on the implications of third-party payment in various parts of the world are summarized. The author presents as an example a case where continuity and quality of care were affected by third-party involvement.
