The author presents clinical material from a case that spans over twenty years. A therapeutic relationship begins when the patient is an adolescent boy. Repeated terminations are the hallmark of the case, which communicate to the analyst the patient's conflict around leaving, being left, and his ultimate psychic separation from his family of origin, and the painful but necessary journey from adolescence into independent adulthood. Techniques of modern psychoanalysis are demonstrated in treating the patient through emotional communications rather than cognitive discourse.
