June Bernstein, who died in the night of December 21-22, 2016, was instrumental in the birth and growth of this journal and became its editor in 2005. As valuable as was her mastery of both Freudian and modern psychoanalytic theory and history, Dr. Bernstein’s essential gift as an editor might have been the energy and enthusiasm that fueled her encouragement and development of younger writers. She was, of course, a prolific writer for the journal herself, publishing many seminal theoretical and clinical articles that were collected as a monograph as our Volume 38, Number 1, dated 2013. In her writing and in conversation Dr. Bernstein also consistently called upon her great memory and love for specific works of Freud throughout her lifetime.
Dr. Bernstein was a dedicated teacher, supervisor, and research adviser at both the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies and the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis, where she was honored as Professor Emerita. She was an excellent teacher, erudite, quite irreverent, opinionated and very funny. Her many contributions to both schools, and to the field of psychoanalysis at large—and especially, for this moment, to this journal—live on, providing energy and direction to us all.
