The author examines Winnicott's “fear of breakdown” idea as it may relate to the transmission of trauma and to the question of psychosis, and to its manifestation in the transference. Winnicott, at the end of his paper, turned his formulation around and spoke of nothing happening, when something could have happened. Dr. Fromm asks whether this tragically empty moment might speak to the fear of breakthrough that both parent and child sense as they stumble into the fallout of trauma that one has been carrying for the other.
