In presenting stages from the long-term case of a patient strongly inhibited by the fear of breakdown, the author focuses on the experience not so much of the analyst and the patient as of the analyst-patient dyad. This presented itself as a relational drama depicting the mother-infant transference, including love, hate, pathos, trauma, and grief. Winnicott's thinking on this subject, in this process, happened to be explicitly introduced by the patient.
