The author reflects on how an impulsive and unsuccessful action in a class with an instructor she especially admired created, along with inevitable discomfort and defensive embarrassment, the motivation to free herself from the grip of early impulses. She perceived the conflict as being engendered by the parenting that she had experienced as a child, which had made her growth and learning more laborious and conflict-ridden than it would any longer be.
