In this paper, the author describes his experiences in the advisement orientation group that he worked in for his first two semesters as an analyst in training at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies. He explores how being a member of such a group, led by an experienced, expert practitioner of modern psychoanalysis, taught him about the process of learning to become a modern psychoanalyst. Topics discussed include: transference as an educational tool, emotional communications in the classroom, resistance to regression as resistance to learning, the importance of cultivating a spirit of freedom regarding the capacity to experience and express all feelings, and the relationship between fantasies about feelings and orientation to reality.
