The author introduces a clinical technique which employs the patient's use of imagination. Patients are asked what they would think of a boss, a caretaker, a coach, etc., who treated them or others in the way that they treat themselves. The patient then focuses on the emotional response they had to a parent or parental substitute and associate it with a bodily zone. This is used to access id impulses of aggression and affection. The discharge of the id and its effect upon the object's representation results in changes in the self-representation and behavior of the patient.
