While working with patients who seek treatment for physical symptoms that appear to defy traditional medical remedy, a unique opportunity arises to observe and interpret unconscious fantasy. The author examines his own history of somatic disorder in parallel with one such patient, whose pain syndrome inhibits everyday functioning. Using their shared artistic identities, the author then explores the uses of psychosomatic symptomatology as both a substitute for and obstacle to creative expression.
