Building on personal experience and theory, the author examines how children with immigrant parents experience exile from their cultural origins as they assimilate into American culture. A liminal space is navigated in search of selfhood and an evolving parent/child dynamic. The author explores, through an Asian American lens, how these children might be “parentified” to achieve the American Dream, which creates a perpetual sense of Otherness and loss that lasts into adulthood.
