Exploring the ways in which gender presentation is used as a possible solution to pre-oedipal conflicts and severe trauma, the author takes a snapshot of the treatment, written in the form of a theatrical play. Through analysis of the patient's somatization, agoraphobia, and difficult enactments, the author becomes aware of the patient's early disturbances in attachment and separation from the primitive mother. Analyst and patient both engage in an unconscious mutual disavowal of the patient's penis. As the analyst allows herself to make the penis thinkable, so too does the patient. What results is the ability for the patient to talk about her penis, and the trauma it represents, opening up space for the patient's gender presentation to expand during the course of treatment.
