The author investigates the impact of current popular culture trends, particularly social media and reality television, on the emergence and maintenance of primitive psychological states in individuals. Drawing on the writings of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Otto Kernberg, and others, the author argues that the psychological strategies and structures evoked by social media and reality television are akin to those found in borderline personality and narcissism. While these primitive states can be temporary, the author posits that the widespread presence of those states threatens psychological maturation and fosters a more regressive, divided, and superficial society.
