This single case study examines the meaning and function of a borderline patient's resistance to the use of the couch throughout an ongoing seven-year analysis. The findings reveal a status quo resistance expressed by a refusal to use the couch. The refusal is understood to be an expression of an unconscious fear/wish of intimacy, which is attached to a fantasy of the patient being hurt and/or the patient having and acting on an impulse to kill. The study includes an exploration of countertransferences and the narcissistic defense.
