In discussing the intra and interpersonal needs of those suffering from schizoid personality disorder, the author argues for the need to be perceived, understood and sensitively responded to in order for the psychoanalytic treatment to have optimal effect. He goes on to examine how such patients utilize various behaviors and ways of being which nullify the possibility for emotional contact and the relationship which they desire but dread. The author considers how analysts who are able to live in and tolerate the psychic experience of the patient, resolve their own resistances to contact and utilize emotion to do so, are better able to advance emotional presence and relate more easily.
