I am grateful to Pearl King for her contribution to this book of Paula Heimann’s papers. There is no analyst of the British Psycho-Analytical Society better suited to write these memoirs than Pearl King. Her personal knowledge of Paula Heimann’s contribution to the life of the Society over many years, of Paula Heimann’s accounts of her professional curriculum vitae which she discussed with her in great detail for the Archives of the Society, and also her personal appreciation of Paula Heimann as a colleague and former teacher have augmented a valuable introduction to the reader of Paula Heimann as a person.
I wish to thank David Tuckett, the editor of the New Library of Psychoanalysis, for his help and repeated encouragement with preparing the manuscript.
Ann Hayman, Pearl King, John Padel, and Eric Rayner have given me help and valuable assistance with writing the Editor’s Introduction and I wish to thank them for it. Special thanks are due to my colleague and friend, Faith Miles, who has given me support and a great deal of time-consuming help with editing Paula Heimann’s unpublished papers. Her contributions were particularly valuable as she was supervised by her for several years.
My secretary, Yvonne Jackson-Browne, has been willing to type and re-type the manuscript with cheerful patience and she deserves my thanks for it.
The generosity of Paula Heimann’s family, executors of her literary estate, has made it possible to include in this collection seven papers which have not been available in the English language before.
I should also like to acknowledge the help of the Board and Finance Committee of the Institute of Psycho-Analysis which made loans available to finance the translations and editorial work.
The editor and publisher would like to thank the following for permission to reproduce copyright material: The International Journal of Psycho-Analysis (chapters 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 19); The Hogarth Press Ltd and The Institute of Psycho-Analysis (ch
