Firstly a warm thank you to Dana Birksted-Breen who, when Editor of the New Library series, encouraged me to produce this book; and to Alessandra Lemma, the present Editor of the New Library series, who offered further encouragement and helpful editorial suggestions. I am grateful to the Editorial Board of the New Library and the anonymous reviewers who offered suggestions and recommended the publication of this book.
Naturally, I am very grateful to all the authors of the chapters in this volume who agreed to have their papers either re-published or published for the first time – Haydée Faimberg, Lisa Farley, André Green, Dodi Goldman, Zjelko Loparic, René Roussillon, Thomas Ogden, Christopher Reeves, Nellie Thompson, Daniel Widlöcher, and Kenneth Wright. There has been a lively ‘two way’ exchange over many years concerning our mutual passion for Winnicott’s innovations. Thanks also go to Anne Patterson, who towards the end of the book’s development assisted in the research for the footnotes and references for Chapter 1 and prepared the Glossary. I am also grateful to Anne for her careful reading through and checking of the final manuscript.
Thank you to Steph Ebdon of The Marsh Agency for her sustained support and sound advice. My thanks also goes to the Winnicott Trust for their past sponsorship of my work on Winnicott since the early 1990s. For this volume I am grateful for their permission to re-publish Winnicott’s papers for Chapters 1, 5 and 13.
A warm thank you to Peter Fonagy, Mary Target and David Tuckett for their positive reception of my proposal for this book and for facilitating the Donald Winnicott Today Conference at University College London in 2006.
