R. Horacio Etchegoyen is alive and still active while I’m writing this essay in 2013. For all of those who know him personally, and for a vast majority of colleagues, he has always been an iconic and charismatic figure – especially so for Latin Americans who know him as the first President of the IPA coming from this geographic area. On the other hand, he is also known as the most obstinate and tireless promoter of Latin American authors in the wide world of international psychoanalysis, through the inclusion of their contributions in his own books and papers, many presented in international congresses. This is surely not a minor merit if we remember that for many years and with few exceptions Latin American psychoanalytic original productions were practically unknown in the northern hemisphere, much in the way that Latin America had to wait to be accepted on equal terms with the colleagues of the USA and Europe in the governing bodies of the IPA.
Some 35 years of a close relationship with R. H. Etchegoyen surely are enough to keep in one’s mind a huge repertoire of memories from different moments in various settings. Among them I have to mention his historical seminars on the Theory of Psychoanalytic Technique, whose subject matters we (the then-Associate Professors) previously studied with him as the drafts of what would later become his worldwide known Fundamentals of Psychoanalytic Technique. Supervisions, study groups, papers published in collaboration, come to mind, as well as the shared books’ readings and the frequent meetings over coffee with common friends for that most Argentine habit of discussing local and international politics. Horacio is known
for his hospitality and for his being always accessible. A reasonable conclusion of all this seems to be that to get acquainted with one of the most important Latin American contributors and key figure of psychoanalysis may turn the space here available to be a scarce one.
