The ideas in this book are the outcome of my thinking and my own ‘psychic work’ over a number of decades, and I am grateful to my former teachers and to the many colleagues and friends I have been in contact with over the years. I have benefited from having ‘a home’ in the British Psychoanalytical Society as well as from my contact with psychoanalysts from other psychoanalytic cultures. All my ideas emerge from my work in the consulting room and I am grateful to all my patients for this experience.
I thank Alessandra Lemma, the editor of the New Library for her continued encouragement for this book, her support and her comments.
