Since its foundation in 1967, our group's main concern has been research into the problems posed by the psyche-soma relationship and the psychoanalytic technique applied to it. As a result of our activities the Research Department has published several books and papers on different subjects. (For further information, please visit our site at funchiozza.com)
Our work procedure is as follows: each area of the psyche-soma relationship is investigated by a research team and the reports are then repeatedly evaluated and worked through in scientific exchange meetings between members of the group and other colleagues that follow our work closely. At the moment our efforts are concentrated on four subjects: systemic lupus erythematosus, Parkinson's disease, flu, and mycosis.
There are other important issues in our present research. One is “lethargy,” a special kind of sleepiness, that is common both in countertransference and in everyday life. Another is the relevance of the destructuring of the “key of innervation” of affects (as Freud called it) for the development of somatic diseases. This question has for a long time been an important issue in our research and it has now led us to focus on the following topics: (1) the constitution of different types of affects; (2) affects as a foundation for values; (3) the transformation of affect through thinking and language; (4) the retarding (as regards technological progress) of the maturing of affects in humanity at large, as a source of the present-day axiological crisis.
