We continue to offer the multifaceted program described in our last report. Our program centers around monthly interdisciplinary dialogues with leading neuroscientists. These are public meetings, usually held on the first Saturday of each month. Since the appearance of the last issue of Neuro-Psychoanalysis, our guests included Vilayanur Ramachandran (who spoke on anosognosia and on aesthetic perception) and Christof Koch (who spoke on consciousness and the unconscious). In December, Todd Sacktor addressed the complex topic of the molecular mechanisms of memory. In addition, we have six research groups working on the following topics: early mental development (led by Peter Neubauer), psychopharmacology (Mortimer Ostow), consciousness (James Schwartz), brain imaging in psychiatry (Bob Scharf), memory (Lester Friedman), the body image (Larry Kunstadt) and clinical studies (Mark Solms). We now have two neuroscientist candidates in the full clinical training program, and a few other applications in the pipeline. We have convened a small focus group of analysts and neuroscientists to consider the related question of the research training needs of neuroscientists who have an interest in learning about psychoanalysis but who do not wish to undergo the full clinical training. We are also engaged in a substantial fund-raising drive, aimed primarily at the endowment of a postdoctoral research fellowship at our Center. We also wish to create a number of smaller student scholarships and other awards in order to facilitate the continued, rapid development of this extremely important field.
