The mind-body issue has always been a focus of special attention for the Portuguese Society of Psychoanalysis (President: Celeste Malpique) whose members have often contacted and cooperated with well-known psychoanalysts (such as Pierre Marty, Michel Fain, Sami-Ali, Joyce McDougall, Christophe Dejours, and Graeme Taylor). In 1999, the first number of the Portuguese Journal of Psychosomatics was issued, having as Editor-in-Chief and members of its Editorial Board the Portuguese psychoanalysts Coimbra de Matos, Jaime Milheiro, and Rui Coelho. From the other side, neuroscientists, such as Antonio Damasio, have conducted lectures at a meeting of the Portuguese Society of Psychoanalysis, and Portuguese psychoanalysts (such as Pedro Luzes, Emilio Salgueiro, Joao Franca de Sousa, and Rui Coelho) attended the recent meeting on “Neuroscientific and Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Emotion,” held on July 21-23, 2000, in London. Taking into account the importance of this issue, one of the forthcoming meetings of the Portuguese Society of Psychoanalysis (March 2001, Porto), organized by the Porto Institute of Psychoanalysis (Director: Jaime Milheiro) will be a 2-day meeting on the subject “From Body Pain to Soul Pain.” This event will include a lecture by Mark Solms and a workshop on “Pain,” which is being arranged with the participation of both psychoanalysts (Mark Solms) and neuroscientists (Deolinda Lima).
