Several members of the Viennese psychoanalysis–neuroscience study group attended the First International Neuro-Psychoanalysis
Congress in July of this year in London. They also took part in the founding session of the International Neuro-Psychoanalysis Society that was held before the conference itself began. Both events were perceived as historical occasions, and all of the Viennese participants felt that they had witnessed some unique and outstanding developments in our field.
The conference was perceived as having a very serious approach, with a high scientific standard, and at the same time remarkable openness toward unorthodox ideas. The whole atmosphere was one of optimism and encouragement. The conference boosted our motivation to continue and even increase the activities of our group here in Vienna. Our plan for next year is to invite a number of interested neurologists to participate in the group.
We expect our group to grow considerably as interest in this field has been increasing among psychoanalysts too. Our group is going to organize several subgroups, which will specialize in topics such as epilepsy, psychodynamic aspects of the early symptomatology in dementia of the Alzheimer type, and other topics not yet finalized. Last but not least we are organizing a series of introductory lectures on the neurosciences for our group over the forthcoming academic year.
