We have been planning a conference to address a question that continues to challenge all of us: how to integrate research findings from the biological and neuroscientific spheres with our clinical work as psychoanalysts. Titled Minding the Body, Embodying the Mind: Conversations Between Researchers and Psychoanalysts, this conference will take place on June 2-3, 2001, in Washington, DC. Speakers include Regina Pally, Mark Solms, Stephen Suomi, Bessel van der Kolk, and Drew Westen. Their presentations will cover a range of topics currently of interest—the biological underpinnings of nonverbal communication, interaction of trauma and brain functioning, therapeutic action, attachment, and dreaming—and will be followed by discussions from clinical psychoanalysts who will attempt to apply empirical findings to their own work in the consulting room. We anticipate that the conference will provide a forum for a lively and stimulating exchange of ideas in this important area.
