The Italian Group was inaugurated in Bologna on September 23, 2000. Scientific Committee: Professors E. C. Gori, M. Mancia, and Dr. Scalzone. Coordinator: Professor E. C. Gori. All members are, for the time being, mostly psychoanalysts from SPI, but there were also psychotherapists from other societies and also neuroscientists. We will be able to admit many nonanalysts in the future.
During the meeting proposals were made about different subjects of study that would promote members' interest in forming study groups in different places in Italy. The subjects included: a methodological basis for developing a dialogue between psychoanalysis and neuroscience; the importance of metapsychology; affects; memory and its importance in therapy; psychosomatic diseases; dreams; consciousness; and the body–mind problem. The group met again in Rome on November 25, 2000, and there was a third meeting in February 2001, in Bologna. In January 2001 a meeting was held of SPI members from Central Southern Italy, in order to set up new study groups on the relationship between psychoanalysis and neuroscience.
There has been great interest in questions related to the interfaces between psychoanalysis and neuroscience. This supports and encourages us to continue our planning and we hope to increase and improve our knowledge.
