The mind–body issue has always been a focus of special interest to the Portuguese Society of Psychoanalysis (President: Celeste Malpique) whose members have often contacted and cooperated with well-known psychoanalysts (such as Pierre Marty, Michel Fain, Sami-Ali, Joyce McDougall, Christophe Dejours and Graeme Taylor). In 1999, the first issue of the Portuguese Journal of Psychosomatics was issued, having as Editor-in-Chief and members of its Editorial Board the following Portuguese psychoanalysts: Coimbra de Matos, Jaime Milheiro, and Rui Coelho.
From the other side, neuroscientists such as Antonio Damasio have conducted lectures at a meeting of the Portuguese Society of Psychoanalysis, and Portuguese psychoanalysts (such as Pedro Luzes, Emilio Salgueiro, Joao Franca de Sousa, and Rui Coelho) have attended the recent meeting on “Neuroscientific and Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Emotion,” held on July 22-23, 2000, at the Anna Freud Centre, London. Taking into account the importance of this issue, one of the following meetings (March 2001, Porto) of the Portuguese Society of Psychoanalysis, organized by the Porto Institute of Psychoanalysis (Director: Jaime Milheiro) was a two-day meeting on the subject “From Body Pain to Soul Pain.” At this event Mark Solms gave a lecture as well as taking part in a Workshop on “Pain,” which was arranged with the participation of both psychoanalysts (Mark Solms) and neuroscientists (Deolinda Lima).
