In 2001, the original body–mind study group continued to meet once a month, chaired by Iréne Matthis. After finishing a thorough study of the evolution of the human brain and consciousness, by working through Terrence Deacon's book The Symbolic Species, we devoted most of the year to Clinical Studies in Neuro-Psychoanalysis by Karen Kaplan-Solms and Mark Solms. In June 2001, Professor Hans Liljenström, from the Agora Biosystems who does research in neural networks, gave a seminar on a physicist's perspective on consciousness and the body–mind problem.
Since January 2000, a group of about eight people, chaired by Iréne Matthis, has studied the theoretical and clinical work that is going on at the Centro de Consulta Medica Weizsaecker in Buenos Aires, directed by Luiz Chiozza. The group, the psychoanalytic psychosomatic group (PAPS), has met regularly, once a month, for two hours. Chiozza's book Why Do We Fall Ill?—The Story Hiding in the Body was read and discussed, in the spring of 2001. Some additional clinical cases have been studied in more detail by two members of the group and were presented and discussed at the regular seminars and during a full day seminar, March 25, 2001.
On the August 31st, Luis Chiozza, invited to Stockholm by the Swedish Psychoanalytical Society, gave a lecture with the title “The Mind–Body Relation in Psychoanalytical Theory,” dealing with the much debated question of psychophysical parallelism. During the fall of 2001 the PAPS group discussed the text in more detail. Simultaneously we (re)read Freud's “An Outline of Psychoanalysis,” which is closely connected to Chiozza's text. Luis Chiozza was also a lecturer at the 16th World Congress on Psychosomatic Medicine, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, August 24-29, as was Iréne Matthis.
For the last 3 1/2 years Iréne Matthis has been supervising five GPs (somatic doctors at three health care centers in and around Stockholm) in a kind of Balint group. In December 2001 a joint meeting took place between
