This issue, 2003:1, arrives shortly after the joint publication of 2002:1 and 2002:2 and means that the Journal is now returned to being published on schedule.
The Target Article, by Edward Khantzian, focuses on addiction—a matter that has always been of great interest to psychoanalysis and has recently been at the center of substantial developments within neuroscience. Addiction is, of course, also a problem that is gaining increasing importance within modern industralized society. As readers will see, the Target Article has led to a lively set of commentaries—which have been responded to by Khantzian.
The four Original Articles in this issue cover some of the key concepts—in particular, affect and trauma—that form part of the common ground between psychoanalysis and the neurosciences. We also pleased to publish the Affective Neuroscience Personality Scales, which should bring the topic of quantitative personality research (and the currently dominant “Big Five” model) a much-needed reassessment in the context of neuroscience.
Also, as ever, this issue includes the usual departments of Book Reviews, Research Digest, and Bulletin.
We welcome the Journal back onto its appropriate schedule and offer advance warning that the 2003:2 issue will be published toward the end of this year.
