Initiating and sustaining studies and research within the new interdisciplinary fields of neuro-psychoanalysis and neuro-psychosomatics is a process fraught with all the ups and downs that attach to every human activity. Some endeavors run into trouble, while others proliferate and breed. Thus the end of 2004 saw the birth of a third group in Brazil: the Neuro-Psychoanalysis Study and Research Group of Rio de Janeiro (GENPSA-Rio). Three additional groups have also been started elsewhere: by Rita Hayes in Brisbane, Australia; by Slawomir Murawiec in Poland; and by Knut Leseth in Bergen, Norway. They are all most heartily welcome.
From some groups there are short messages. Fernando Morena, from the Mexican group, tells me that their time and work has been devoted to the National Psychoanalytic Congress in Mexico City, held in November 2005, with the main topic being Neuroscience and Psychoanalysis. In Finland the original study group, under Turo Reenkola, are in the process of examining closely Freud's 1895 “Project,” and two groups of therapists from Helsingin Psykoterapiayhdistys are studying Jaak Panksepp's Affective Neuroscience.
From Sweden we can report that the group on Philosophy of Psychology are trying to distinguish between reading Kant as an eighteenth-century philosopher and as a psychologist, and they have been discussing the philosophical (epistemological) problems in the writings of Mark Solms and Donald Davidson. The Infant Development group has finished their reading of Fonagy et al., Affect Regulation, Mentalization, and the Development of the Self, and is continuing with more papers on the same topic. The PAPS (Psychoanalytic Psychosomatics) group have used the year 2005 to study psychoanalytic aspects of different somatic illnesses, in order to prepare for a full week (October 17-22) of seminars in Buenos Aires, at the Weizsäcker Centre for Medical Studies.
