The study group on The Philosophy of Psychology, studying epistemic and ontological problems relevant to psychoanalysis, is now in its ninth year. The eight members are, as before, guided by the philosopher Lars-Goran Johansson in monthly seminars. At present we are working with Gerard Edelman's Second Nature (2006).
The Swedish PsychoAnalytic PsychoSomatic groups (PAPS) are active in three university towns: Umea in the northern part of Sweden, Gothenburg on the west coast, and Stockholm, the capital.
The Umeå group was initiated in March 2006 by Ulla Lager-lof, who in October 2005 had spent one week in Buenos Aires at the Weizsacker Institute together with members from the two PAPS-groups in Stockholm and Gothenburg. After that interesting and provoking week she decided to deepen her knowledge in understanding the psyche-soma enigma from the viewpoint of psychoanalytic theories and with that aim started a study group. It was not difficult to find members interested in the subject because there was already a growing interest among psychotherapists in Umea due to some years with Professor Irene Matthis, who had been lecturing in Umea on the same field.
The group, which for practical reasons had to be limited to eight psychotherapists, has been meeting once a month, studying Luis Chiozza's books Why Do We Fall III? (1999) and Hidden Affects in Somatic Disorders (1998). The group devotes much time trying to understand the ideas presented in the books and the consequences they imply for clinical work and for the understanding of what it means to be a human being. The group is looking forward to many more years of interesting work.
The Gothenburg PAPS group, with nine members, chaired by Ulla Bjerstrom, has continued to meet once a month during 2007 and 2008 studying Hidden Affects in Somatic Disorders by Luis Chiozza (1998). We are still trying to grasp the fuller meaning of the psychoanalytic view on organic disturbances, as it is formulated by Dr. Chiozza. Using this mode
