The Neuropsychoanalytic Clinical Study Group of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP) was formed in 2003. The idea for a Neuropsychoanalytic Clinical Study group was inspired by a series of five lectures given by Dr. Mark Solms at NPAP. Many of the lectures were attended by well over 100 members. Shortly thereafter a group of 25 NPAP psychoanalysts formed the first New York clinical study group to provide psychoanalytic treatment to brain-injured patients with circumscribed brain lesions.
Our members attend a monthly clinical consultation group, where members treating patients with right- or left-hemisphere focal brain lesions present their case material to the group. We are fortunate to have Dr. Solms as our educational director and clinical study consultant. One of our primary goals is to understand “to what extent psychoanalytic therapy might contribute to the rehabilitation of various disorders of personality, motivation, and emotions that are associated with focal neurological damage” (Kaplan-Solms & Solms, 2000, p. 64). Our group is now in its sixth year, and we have treated and followed nine patients, many for two years or longer.
In 2008, after expanding our activities, we adopted the designation “Center” and became a separate entity within the structure of NPAP.
In future reports we hope to describe our clinical work in detail.
