Individual members of the Neuropsychoanalysis Group of Mexico City have been active during the last semester of 2012.
Jesús Baca has completed his doctoral dissertation, “The Ego Genesis: A Neuropsychoanalytic Study,” and defended it on 13 December at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The work combines two perspectives—a Freudian and a neurobiological point of view—about the early development of what Freud called the ego (Ich). Dr. Baca proposed several correlations, set according to a specific methodology that comprises three axes: a functional correlation, a sequential correlation, and a detailed anatomical suggestion of the specific brain areas involved. He addressed the two main developmental processes according to Freudian theory—the autoerotic phase and the narcissistic phase—and explored how they might be understood or correlated with neurobiological theory. The research shows that there is a correlation between the functional achievement according to Freudian theory in each developmental phase, and the ones shown in neurobiological development during the first years of life. On the other hand, there is a correlation between those functional achievements in its developmental sequence in psychoanalytic and neuroscientific descriptions. Additionally, it is possible to suggest a correspondence between the Freudian theory of development and certain neuroanatomical features.
Maribel Rodríguez Luna is working on the development of clinical applications of neuropsychoanalysis from three perspectives. The first involves a case study of a teenager going through psychoanalytic treatment, providing a psychoanalytic and psychosomatic dimension to understanding the dynamics in the patient. The second involves assessing the relationships between neurological, psychiatric and psychoanalytic information about the case, as well as exploring behavioral changes. The third perspective involves building theoretical models that come from both a neurobiological and a psychoanaly
